On Monday President Donald Trump reduced the deadline he gave Russia and Ukraine to make a peace deal from 50 days on July 14 to just 10 to 12 days. Notably, 35 days would be left under the original 50 day deadline. The penalty Trump is threatening Russia with is 100 percent tariffs.
“I’m going to set a new deadline… about 10 or 12 days from today. There’s no reason to wait. I wanted to be generous, but we’re just not seeing any progress,” Trump said. “I’m not so interested in talking anymore.”
After 10-12 days, the US may announce new sanctions and possibly secondary tariffs, Trump said. He added that he "loves" Russia and "doesn't want to do this":

Trump made the comments while sitting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The President mentioned how Russia has already lost around 1 million soldiers, and that he loves the Russian people.
“He talks – we have such nice conversations, such respectful and nice conversation. And then, people die the following night,” Trump said of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he said earlier in the day that he’s very disappointed in.
Fox News chronicled Trump’s frustration with the matter:
Trump’s comments came just hours after Russia unleashed more than 300 drones and missiles across Ukraine, prompting not only Kyiv to scramble its air force, but Poland’s Operational Command said it too had deployed fighter jets to the sky.
“I would have said five times we would have had a deal. I’ve spoken to President Putin a lot,” Trump told reporters, echoing his previous frustration that speaking with Putin has yielded little to no results. “But we’ve had discussions…we thought we had that settled numerous times.
“And then President Putin goes out and such, launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever. You have bodies lying all over the street,” Trump continued. “And I say, that’s not the way to do it. So we’ll see what happens.”
Trump announced on July 14 that he will levy a 100 percent tariff on Russia if it fails to make a peace deal with Ukraine within 50 days.
Trump made the comments at the White House while meeting with NATO’s secretary general, Mark Rutte.
“We’re very, very unhappy with them, and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs, if you don’t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent, they call them secondary tariffs,” The President said July 14.
Trump is disappointed with Russian President Vladimir Putin because he wanted him to make a peace deal months ago. He said thought he had a deal with Russia on the Ukraine war “about four times. And here we are still talking.”
