Federal authorities discovered an illegal alien from Jamaica was working as a police officer in Maine after he attempted to purchase a firearm last week.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just released details about the arrest of Jon Luke Evans on Friday in Biddington, ME.
Evans tried to buy a gun, triggering an ATF alert due to his immigration status.
During questioning, Evans told ICE officers he was attempting to purchase the weapon for his job as a law enforcement officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department.
The Jamaican first entered the U.S. legally in September of 2023 via Miami International Airport.
Evans went on to violate the terms of his visa by failing to depart the country one week after his entry.
Incredibly, he would go on to become a police officer in the Maine resort town.
“Jon Luke Evans not only broke U.S. immigration law, but he also illegally attempted to purchase a firearm. Shockingly, Evans was employed as a local law enforcement officer,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde.
“The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien and unlawfully issue him a firearm while on duty would be comical if it weren’t so tragic. We have a police department that was knowingly breaking the very law they are charged with enforcing in order to employ an illegal alien.”
ICE says a similar incident unfolded in April when they arrested a 32-year-old illegal alien from Congo who was working as a corrections officer on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
