On Wednesday evening a 8.8 magnitude earthquake, the sixth strongest ever recorded, struck off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. The quake was the largest since the 2011 earthquake which led to the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown. Tsunami alerts were triggered for Japan and Hawaii, along with several Pacific islands, and a tsunami advisory was issued for the entire West Coast of the U.S.

Massive congestion was witnessed in Honolulu as thousands evacuate for the potential tsunami.

“A tsunami with a height of 3-4 metres (10-13 feet) was recorded in parts of Kamchatka, Sergei Lebedev, regional minister for emergency situations said, urging people to move away from the shoreline of the peninsula,” Reuters said. “The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was shallow at a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles), and was centred 126 km (80 miles) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 165,000 along the coast of Avacha Bay. It revised the magnitude up from 8.0 earlier.”

Japan ordered evacuations for potentially affected areas, NHK reports.

“Tsunami warnings are in effect for a major stretch of Japan’s eastern Pacific coast, from Hokkaido’s eastern Pacific coast down to Wakayama Prefecture,” The Guardian said.

Tsunami waves have now begun arriving in Japan.

An advisory indicates strong currents and dangerous waves can be expected, so people should stay off beaches and out of the water.

“According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center, the advisory was in effect for the entire West Coast, including Washington and Oregon. The advisory also includes a portion of British Columbia, Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and areas of South and Southeast Alaska,” The LA Times said.
