Two women were stabbed by a suspect who drowned shortly afterward at a park in Florida, authorities say.
The shocking incident unfolded in Tallahassee on the evening of Sept. 10, but footage of the suspect’s death is now circulating on social media.
The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) was alerted at around 5:20 p.m. that 19-year-old Octavious McCaine had left his home in an “agitated state and might become violent if approached,” and officers began searching areas McCaine was known to frequent.
At around 7:39 p.m., multiple 911 callers reported that multiple victims had been stabbed in Cascades Park.
Responding officers found two women suffering from stab wounds.
They were both rushed to a local hospital but were expected to survive.
“The suspect ran toward a fenced retaining wall, climbed over it and jumped into a pond inside the park. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team later recovered the individual, identified as McCaine, who was pronounced deceased,” TPD explained in a press release.
“Preliminary findings indicate McCaine was the same person earlier reported to be in distress and suspected of stabbing the women.”
A witness positioned high above the pond recorded the moment McCaine slipped beneath the surface in front of horrified onlookers.
“This was a deeply unsettling incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the witnesses who were impacted by this attack,” TPD Chief Lawrence Revell stated.
TPD says a preliminary investigation indicates McCaine was experiencing a “severe mental health episode at the time of the incident.”
