Instead of deploying the military, Pope Leo urged the Trump administration to find “another way” to solve its issues with Venezuela.
“It seems there is the possibility that there be some activity, even an operation to invade Venezuelan territory,” he said during the flight. “I truly believe that it is better to look for ways of dialogue, maybe pressure, including economic pressure, but looking another way to change, if that is what they want to do in the United States.”
He also suggested Catholics who see Islam as a threat to Christianity in Europe are being scared by people “who are against immigration and trying to keep out people who may be from another country, another religion, another race.”
After a journalist asked Leo about Catholics who fear the spread of Islam, he encouraged them to be “a little less fearful” of people with different religious beliefs.
Regarding his visit to the Middle East, Pope Leo said “dialogue and friendship between Muslims and Christians is possible” and that perhaps Christians in the U.S. and Europe “be a little less fearful and look for ways of promoting authentic dialogue and respect.”
He later encouraged POTUS to include Europe in America’s negotiations with Russia and Ukraine as the parties remain in the midst of ongoing peace talks.
“It is clear that on one part the president of the United States thinks that a peace plan can be promoted that he would like to do and that at least in a first moment was without Europe, but the presence of Europe is important and that first plan was modified also because of what Europe was saying,” Leo said.
President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner both arrived in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials in hopes to negotiate an end to the war with Ukraine.
Ahead of the talks, Putin told reporters if Europe wants to get involved with the war, Russia will have nobody left to negotiate with.
“We are not planning to go to war with Europe, but if Europe wants to and starts, we are ready right now,” he warned.
