The arson attack targeted a transformer station in the Großkayna district of Braunsbedra. For safety reasons, the network operator shut down the affected section of the grid, cutting power at a total of 14 network points and temporarily leaving nearly 900 households without electricity.
Police said the perpetrators removed a ventilation grille from the building and placed flammable materials, including wood and paper, inside the transformer station before setting them alight. The fire caused severe damage to the electrical equipment, and the service provider said the facility would need to be completely rebuilt. An investigation has been launched on suspicion of arson and disruption of public services.
Power was restored to most affected households within about an hour, with the entire network back up and running by Saturday morning. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, particularly during the winter months, when such attacks can cause serious disruption and pose risks to the public.
