After recommending all U.S. citizens leave the country immediately, the embassies added, “Before departure, U.S. citizens should take precautions and be aware of their surroundings. There are reports of groups of armed militias, known as colectivos, setting up roadblocks and searching vehicles for evidence of U.S. citizenship or support for the United States. U.S. citizens in Venezuela should remain vigilant and exercise caution when traveling by road.”
Americans who decide to stick around could be subjected to “wrongful detention, torture in detention, terrorism, kidnapping, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, crime, civil unrest, and poor health infrastructure.”
There have also been intermittent power and utility outages taking place across Venezuela, and the Trump administration has made it clear it cannot currently guarantee the security of Americans in the country.
The travel advisory comes in the wake of the U.S. arresting Venezuela’s socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro on January 3rd.
President Trump has been communicating with Venezuela’s interim leader Delcy Rodriguez since the capture of Maduro, but he also trolled the country by posting an image of himself with the caption, “Acting President of Venezuela.”

President Trump has suggested U.S. companies restart production in Venezuela, but ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods recently claimed the nation is “uninvestable.”
The president responded while flying on Air Force One Sunday, saying he’ll “be inclined to keep Exxon out” of producing oil in Venezuela due to the remark.
America overtaking the Venezuelan oil supply would mean both Russia and China would have to cut new deals with the U.S. in order to purchase the Latin American country’s crude oil.
Speaking at the White House last week, Trump said Washington was “open to doing business” and welcomed China and Russia to buy Venezuelan petroleum either directly from Caracas or through supplies shipped to American facilities.
He said, “China would have gone in there, and Russia would have gone in there too without US action.”
Cuba, however, will not be getting any oil unless they cut a deal with the Trump administration soon, according to the president.
