The shocking string of events unfolded just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday in Rancho Cucamonga.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) deputies were responding to a residence where a man was threatening a woman with a gun when the male suspect opened fire, striking Deputy Andrew Nunez.
Deputy Nunez was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
The suspect fled on motorcycle, leading authorities onto the 210 Freeway at speeds topping 150 mph.
After performing dangerous maneuvers for several minutes, the suspect was riding in the fast lane when a sedan in front of him suddenly swerved and initiated an intentional collision, causing a spectacular crash that sent the rider flying over the handlebars at 70 mph.
“An narcotics deputy in an unmarked Sheriff’s Department vehicle conducted a pursuit intervention technique and collided with the suspect on the 210 Freeway at Campus Avenue, terminating the pursuit,” SBCSD explained in a press release.
“The suspect was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition. He will be booked for murder upon medical clearance.”
The identity of the suspect has not yet been made public.
Deputy Nunez, 28, was a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s department.
He leaves behind a wife, 2-year-old daughter, and second child on the way.
