An illegal alien from Honduras has been arrested for killing an Illinois county official and his wife in a drunk-driving collision over the weekend, authorities say.
The tragedy unfolded at around 7 p.m. on Friday in Westfield, a village in Clark County.
Investigators say a conversion van driven by Edwin Pacheco-Meza crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a pickup truck carrying four people.
Michael Clayton, 71, and Gail Clayton, 66, were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Two more victims, identified only as a 72-year-old man and 66-year-old woman, were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Michael Clayton was serving a second term as a Coles County Board member representing District 2.
Pacheco-Meza, 34, and passenger Juan Morales-Martinez, 18, were not hurt in the wreck.
Both men were taken into custody by Illinois State Police.
Pacheco-Meza was charged with reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving under the influence.
Morales-Martinez was charged with drug possession and a weapons offense.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged detainers against both men, which were ignored under Illinois sanctuary policies.
ICE agents managed to catch Morales-Martinez as he exited Clark County Jail on Monday.
Pacheco-Meza entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown location and date, while Morales-Martinez was released into the country by the Biden regime after illegally entering in 2023, the Department of Homeland Security says.
“Two innocents were killed because this criminal illegal alien chose to drive under the influence,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
“President Trump and Secretary Noem have unleashed ICE and CBP in Illinois to restore law-and-order and remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities. Anyone who is in the U.S. illegally and thinks they can roam free while breaking our laws and harming Americans is in for a rude awakening. If you are in our country illegally and break our laws, we will find you, arrest you, remove you, and you will never return.”
An investigation is ongoing.
