Barack Obama was furious when former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi essentially coronated ex-Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrat presidential nominee following Joe Biden’s exit, a new book claims.
ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl’s upcoming book, Retribution, describes the ex-president’s meltdown in 2024 when Pelosi threw her support behind Harris less than 24 hours after Biden announced he would step down, prompting accusations she forced him out of the race.

In his new book Retribution, ABC News’s Jonathan Karl provided new details on what had been widely known – that Obama didn’t want a quick coronation of Harris, but rather ‘a process’ to determine who would become the Democratic nominee.
Obama called Pelosi shortly after her endorsement of Harris became public. ‘The Obamas were not happy,’ a Pelosi confidant told Karl. ‘This person summed up Obama’s message to Pelosi as, essentially, “What the f*** did you just do?”‘
Pelosi told the former Democratic president: ‘That train has left the station.’
The endorsement had come as a surprise to Obama because he and Pelosi had been in ‘regular communication’ as it appeared then 81-year-old Biden was nearing the decision to drop out of the race, and ‘they agreed Harris should not simply be handed the nomination unchallenged,’ Karl wrote.
‘Therefore, Obama and Pelosi – arguably the two most influential figures in the Democratic Party – had privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsements,’ the longtime ABC News reporter said.
Pelosi was reportedly the top-level Democrat hatchet man tasked with ending Biden’s re-election bid.
Less than a month after Biden’s abysmal debate performance against Trump, the ex-president announced his withdrawal from the campaign, declaring his support instead for his VP Harris. The following day Pelosi released a statement giving Harris her “enthusiastic support.”
She defended her role in ousting Joe Biden from the 2024 race at last year’s DNC, telling CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, “I did what I had to do,” before claiming Biden made the decision on his own.
Obama’s endorsement, meanwhile, begrudgingly came five days after Biden’s exit, suggesting an unwillingness to accept Harris as the candidate.
In hindsight, it turns out Obama’s political instinct was dead-on.
