Representatives from the U.S. mediated peace negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday. While many of the details of the day’s talks are being kept under wraps for the time being, discussions will continue Wednesday. Territorial disputes are expected to be the major point of disagreement.

Hours before the meeting began President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to make a deal.

“Ukraine better come to the table fast. That’s all I’m telling you,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Moscow announced that any developments will not be made public today, and that the meetings are being held behind closed doors.

“I don’t think we should expect any news today,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Ukraine’s lead negotiator Rustem Umerov described the meeting at the outset, then announced its conclusion with scant detail as to the substance of developments:

Today, we are starting another round of negotiations in a trilateral format — Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.

We thank the American side for its engagement and consistent work in the negotiation process. We are grateful to Switzerland for organizing the meeting and providing the necessary conditions for the discussions.

We have the frameworks approved by the President of Ukraine and a clear mandate. Security and humanitarian issues are on the agenda.

We are working constructively, focused and without excessive expectations. Our task is to maximally advance those solutions that can bring sustainable peace closer.

The first day of trilateral negotiations in Geneva has ended.

After the joint session, we continued working in groups by areas. The discussions focused on practical issues and the mechanisms of possible solutions.

Both the political and military tracks have completed their work for today.

We thank our American partners for their constructive engagement and readiness to work at a steady pace.

Today, the results of the first day of negotiations in Geneva will be reported to the President of Ukraine. Tomorrow morning, the political and military groups will continue their work.

Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky has yet to make a statement as to the Ukrainian report from the meeting in Geneva, but he did preface it with a defiant and stern message:

In the massive strike with which the Russians began the day, 29 missiles of various types were fired, and 25 were shot down. This is an important result for our air defense, and once again, we emphasize that air defense is a daily necessity. I thank all our partners who understand this. Russia greets with a strike even the very day new formats begin in Geneva – trilateral and bilateral with the United States. This very clearly shows what Russia wants and what it is truly intent on. Almost 400 drones were launched as well.

Later today, there will be a report from the delegation following the first round of talks in Geneva. The team absolutely must raise the issue of these strikes – first of all with the American side, which proposed that both Ukraine and Russia refrain from attacks. Ukraine is ready. We do not need war. And we always act symmetrically – defending our state and our independence. Likewise, we are ready to move quickly toward a just agreement to end the war.

The only question is for the Russians: what do they want? And also, whether there will be consequences for Russia for the fact that “shaheds,” missiles, and fantasy chatter about history matter more to them than real diplomacy and lasting peace.

While statements by Ukrainians were sparse, reporting by Russian sources were virtually nonexistent, with TASS (The Russian News Agency) effectively only confirming the meeting has happened.
