President Donald Trump already has a mineral deal with Keiv to pay Washington back for its aid money, crypto may become another method of repayment.
The atomic power facility is located in south east Ukraine and has been occupied by Russian forces since 2022. The revelation of a potential future crypto use for the plant is notable as Ukraine’s Dictator Vladimir Zelensky seeks a joint Kiev-Washington management plan for the facility as part of a peace settlement, while Washington seeks to also include Moscow in the management.
“Washington is interested in using its proposed stake in the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) for a cryptomining operation, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a meeting with business leaders on Thursday, according to Kommersant,” RT reported.
Putin also said the Kremlin may agree to allow Ukraine to use some of the electricity produced by the plant. RT detailed the Russian proposal:
Russia is currently analyzing a counteroffer from Washington in the latest round of shuttle diplomacy, after Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev’s recent return from Miami, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday.
A day earlier, Vladimir Zelensky unveiled his own draft plan, in which he wanted the Russian-held ZNPP to be controlled by Ukraine and the US on a 50/50 basis.
Zaporozhye is the largest nuclear power plant facility in Europe, comprising of six reactors, each generating 950MW with a total plant output of 5,700MW, enough electricity to power about 4 million homes.
Ukraine’s most infamous nuclear reactor facility, Chernobyl, is currently in crisis as damage to its protective structure risks radiation leakage.
The Ukraine war is the first conflict that has taken place near nuclear reactors, with attacks even taking place on the Zaporozhye facility’s grounds, risking a catastrophic meltdown.
