Broderick, of the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York, ruled on Christmas Day that the Trump administration cannot deport Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) CEO Imran Ahmed, who was recently sanctioned by the U.S. State Department for trampling on the free speech of American citizens.
On Tuesday, Washington issued visa bans on Ahmed and four other Europeans, including ex-EU commissioner Thierry Breton.
Ahmed is an Afghanistan-born British citizen currently living in the United States on a Green Card.
The CCDH CEO filed a complaint on Thursday against Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General Pam Bondi, claiming his detainment would be an “unconstitutional arrest and removal.”
Recently-released internal documents from Ahmed’s anti-free speech group admitted it hopes to “kill” Elon Musk’s 𝕏 platform.
Under Secretary of State Sarah B. Rogers said on Tuesday that the Europeans were being sanctioned to reinforce a “red line” against censorship of Americans, explaining, “if you spend your career fomenting censorship of American speech, you’re unwelcome on American soil.”
A conference between Ahmed’s attorneys and U.S. officials is set for Monday.
