“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump said of the Putin. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”
The reporter asked the President who exactly he thinks is stalling the peace process, to which Trump said “Zelensky.”
When asked why he believed Zelensky was holding back the negotiations, Trump said “I just think he’s, you know, having a hard time getting there.”
On January 8 Trump told The New York Times that he still believes Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky still want to make a deal.
“I’ve had cases where I had Putin all done and Zelensky wouldn’t make the deal, which shocked me,” Trump told The Times. “Then I’ve had cases where it was the reverse. I think now they both want to make a deal, but we’ll find out.”
Both Ukraine and Russia have been involved in U.S.-brokered peace negotiations for nearly a year now, part of an agenda put forth by then-candidate Trump to end the war by bringing the two sides to a common understanding.
“I think he wants to make a deal,” Trump said of Putin on January 8. “But I’ve thought about that — I’ve thought that for a long time.”
On Monday Zelensky submitted two draft bills to the country’s parliament which will extend martial law and general military mobilization for another 90 days. The Dictator rules his nation unelected, instead utilizing this martial law to maintain his grip on power.
On December 28 Zelensky met with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago in Florida to discuss a peace plan for ending the Ukraine war. Trump and Zelensky along with their corresponding diplomatic teams spoke behind closed doors for over two hours. Despite the negotiations which Trump described as “excellent,” the peace plan was not finalized. The President did however say that things are moving in the right direction and that ending the war is not a single-day process, but they are getting very close to a final settlement.
“We’ve made a lot of progress… we’ve covered 95%,” Trump told reporters. “We’ve had discussions on just about every subject, that includes with President Putin before. We went into great detail.”
Zelensky said they had “great discussions” during the meeting. Regarding the peace plan details, “90% have been agreed [to],” the Dictator said.
On Wednesday night talkshow host Tucker Carlson reported that Russia is actively considering the use of nuclear weapons against Europe, specifically the UK and Germany, if the Ukraine war continues on for another year or two at the current pace.
Tucker’s statement comes from his interview with Sergey Karaganov, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top advisors.
