Image Credit: Anadolu / Contributor / Getty On Monday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the joint U.S./Israeli attack on Iran is likely to spur on nuclear proliferation, not prevent it, as is the narrative justifying the attack. The same day Russian Deputy Chairman of the Security Council said that President Donald Trump’s regime change wars could spark World War Three.
Lavrov was responding to a statement by White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff regarding Washington’s view that any Iranian uranium enrichment is unacceptable. Witkoff told Fox News:
“Jared and I opened up with the Iranian negotiators telling us they had the inalienable right to enrich all their nuclear fuel that they possessed. That’s how they opened up,” Witkoff recounted.
“We, of course, responded that the president feels we have the inalienable right to stop you dead in your tracks,” he continued.
“They then went on to say that beyond the inalienable right to enrich, that that was going to be their starting point. And Jared and I just sort of looked at ourselves flummoxed and said, ‘Well, we’re really in for it now.’”
The Russian Foreign Minister responded to the Special Envoy’s statement by saying:
“If this logic is being pushed, I guarantee that powerful forces will arise in Iran seeking exactly what the United States seeks to prevent: to make a nuclear bomb, because people who have nuclear bombs don’t get attacked by the U.S.,” Lavrov said. “In a seemingly paradoxical twist, the declared noble cause of preventing nuclear proliferation through a war could stimulate the opposite trend.”
Lavrov also noted that the 2011 NATO-backed uprising in Libya which resulted in the murder of leader Muammar Gaddafi, who abandoned his nuclear program, serves as a warning to nations that not possessing nuclear weapons may result in their overthrow.
Medvedev spoke out against Washington’s regime change war on Monday in an interview with TASS (the Russian News Agency). Responding to if WWIII had already begun, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council said:
“Technically no. If Trump continues his insane course of criminally changing political regimes, it will undoubtedly begin. And any event could be the trigger. Any event,” Medvedev said, mentioning that the offensive is “a war by the U.S. and its allies to preserve global dominance.”
“The fact that the Iranians haven’t responded too seriously yet means they don’t have many opportunities. But they know how to wait; they are an ancient civilization,” he said. “Trump made a grave mistake.”
“With his decision, he put all Americans under potential threat, even despite the fact that the Iranian regime is not liked in neighboring Arab countries.”
“More importantly, the late Ayatollah (Ali Khamenei) was the spiritual father of nearly 300 million Shiites. And now he is also a martyr. You can imagine the rest. And now there is no doubt that Iran will pursue the creation of nuclear weapons with redoubled energy,” he said.
For his part, Trump appears to be, or have been against WWIII, saying that continuing the Ukraine war can trigger WWIII, despite Washington not yet cutting off Kiev from resources and intelligence sharing.
Trump ran against the successor of President-via-autopen Joe Biden, Kamala Harris. The then-Republican President Elect accused the Democrats of inciting WWIII following President Autopen’s long-range, nuclear-capable missile strikes deep into Russia in November 2024 (which did almost trigger nuclear WWIII).
Notably, Trump has been against the Israeli plan of going to war with Iran, holding them back from it in 2025, only now giving in to the Jewish State’s militaristic aspiration.
