An armed suspect was shot dead after he fled a border checkpoint and shot at law enforcement and other motorists on a busy highway in West Texas this week, authorities say.

The harrowing chase unfolded just after 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning in Hudspeth County.

A man identified as James Douglas McMillan, 33, reportedly sped away from a checkpoint near Sierra Blanca after a U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) K-9 alerted to the vehicle he was driving and he was referred for secondary inspection.

“During the pursuit, McMillan – the only person in the vehicle – began shooting out the window at DPS Troopers, other responding law enforcement from the Culberson Co. Sheriff’s Office, Hudspeth Co. Sheriff’s Office, Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) and indiscriminately at civilian vehicles,” the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) explained in a statement.

Law enforcement returned fire and TxDPS troopers performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver), successfully disabling the vehicle.

McMillan remained inside and refused to exit. When he pointed his weapon at officers, they opened fire and killed him, TxDPS says.

“The vehicle crashed near I-10 where the driver of the vehicle subsequently exchanged gunfire with law enforcement personnel,” stated Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott.

“Border Patrol agents performed life-saving measures, but the subject was pronounced deceased. No injuries were reported to law enforcement officers.”

Witness footage obtained by Fox News shows law enforcement with weapons drawn as a helicopter circles overhead.

Authorities determined the vehicle McMillan was driving was reported stolen out of Arizona.

McMillan was a resident of Greenfield, Wisconsin, TxDPS says.

An investigation is ongoing.
