Border authorities intercepted several vessels carrying large groups of illegal aliens during a busy 48-hour span off the California coast.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) just released information about a series of coordinated maritime operations that unfolded near San Diego last weekend.
On Saturday, a CBP Air and Marine Operations (AMO) unit interdicted three boats carrying a total of 36 illegals near San Clemente Island in the span of just one hour.
All 36 claimed to be citizens of Mexico and were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) for processing.
Also on Saturday, the Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour and the USS Augusta intercepted another vessel carrying 16 subjects who were turned over to USBP.
On Sunday evening, a smuggling boat carrying 20 individuals was interdicted by Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour more than eight miles west of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.
In total, 72 foreign national from Mexico, Central and South America and Africa were taken into custody.
“Criminal histories for some of those apprehended include reentry after deportation, driving under the influence, firearm possession, domestic violence, grand theft and resisting arrest,” CBP stated in a press release.
All individuals will be be processed for removal or federal prosecution.
“Ensuring our country is safe doesn’t stop with apprehending those who attempt to enter illegally,” stated USBP San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Justin De La Torre.
“Working alongside our CBP and DHS partners and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, we will identify, investigate, and hold accountable every individual involved in these criminal smuggling operations including those piloting the vessels, the coordinators, facilitators, and the foreign terrorist organizations directing them. Together, we are committed to dismantling these networks and pursuing all available consequences to the fullest extent of the law.”
Mexico has been rocked by cartel violence in recent days, which could influence illegal migration flows for the foreseeable future.
