Image Credit: youtube screenshot A registered sex offender is courting controversy after announcing plans to run for city council in Fresno, California, with many asserting his conviction should bar him from seeking office as he vows to change the very laws that put him behind bars.
Rene Campos in 2018 pled no contest to possessing child sex abuse material, a misdemeanor, but claims he’s gone through the system and has been rehabilitated.
Campos has now launched a campaign for the city council’s District 7 seat, claiming he’s going to be transparent about his past.
“They say let’s choose somebody outside the box, somebody who knows the system from inside out, because me, I’ve experienced the laws that we are trying to reform right now,” Campos told ABC30 Action News.
While California state law does not prohibit registered sex offenders from seeking public office, an opponent also vying for the seat says Campos’ past should disqualify him.
“I think it should be a disqualification to serve in public office,” candidate Nav Gurm told ABC30.
“If I’m the next councilmember in District 7 and I can’t show up to a school site, how can I best represent the people in the neighborhoods I want to serve?” he added.
ABC30 reports Campos has not yet filed to run in the race, and that the primary election will be held on June 2.
