The horrifying tragedy unfolded at around 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 in Troy, a city in Pike County.
Annie Laura Cooper, 59, was walking along U.S. 231 when she was struck by a vehicle, the Troy Messenger reports.
Troy police arrived and found Cooper unresponsive in the roadway. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators identified the suspect vehicle and tracked it down roughly 200 miles away in Lucedale, Mississippi.
On Dec. 27, Malvin Geovany Villalobos-Bonilla was taken into custody in Lucedale, and he and the vehicle were transported back to Pike County.
Villalobos-Bonilla, 45, was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Death and ordered held on $250,000 bond.
“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Villalobos-Bonilla is from Honduras and is believed to be in the country illegally, for which he has been deported previously,” Troy Police Chief Danny Barron explained in a press release.
“The Troy Police Department notified Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to make them aware of the charge filed against Villalobos-Bonilla and allow them to place a detainer on him.”
