President Donald Trump issued a message on Truth Social Saturday, suggesting countries that rely on the Strait of Hormuz for trade send military ships to the region in order to make sure the channel is safe for commercial traffic.
“Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” Trump wrote. “We have already destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability, but it’s easy for them to send a drone or two, drop a mine, or deliver a close range missile somewhere along, or in, this Waterway, no matter how badly defeated they are.”
He added, “Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a Nation that has been totally decapitated. In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian Boats and Ships out of the water. One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!”
During an interview with Sky News on Friday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US Navy is preparing to escort tankers through the Strait.
The Trump administration’s announcement comes after Iran’s Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said Thursday that “the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed” and Iranian state tv aired “on the ground” footage from the Strait, showing idling tankers allegedly ordered to remain still or be fired upon by the IRGC.
Meanwhile, a US-owned tanker was attacked by a pair of unmanned suicide boats at an Iraqi seaport this week.
“After speaking to the surviving crew members, the attack appears to have been deliberate and calculated,” New Jersey-based Safesea Group said in a statement.
More than 15 tankers and other ships have been attacked in the Gulf since the beginning of the joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran.
