Police patrolling near the bank on the Rue la Boétie early on Friday morning spotted a man attempting to ignite an improvised explosive device (IED) and apprehended him.
The man’s accomplice escaped, however.
A manhunt is currently underway to find him.
“Well done to the rapid response team from the police authority, whose actions thwarted a violent terrorist attack in Paris last night,” French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said Saturday.
“Vigilance remains at a higher level than ever.”
Nunez linked the attempt to a similar incident in Rotterdam, the Netherlands earlier this month, when four youths were arrested for throwing an IED at a synagogue.
During questioning, the Paris suspect said he had been recruited via Snapchat and offered $700 to carry out the attack. The man who recruited and paid him also drove him to the bank.
An IED was also used in an attack outside the New York Mayor’s resident in New York city, at the beginning of the month.
Emir Balat, 18, hurled a homemade grenade into a crowd of anti-Islam protestors, before being arrested by the NYPD, along with 19-year-old Ibrahim Nikk.
