The Bavarian government will add the right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) to its list of so-called “extremist or extremist-influenced organisations.”

The move places the opposition party alongside radical groups such as Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State (ISIS), and the militant far-left Antifa.

According to Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (of the centre-right CSU), the decision is based on findings from the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The classification could have serious consequences. AfD members applying for jobs in the civil service—such as teaching, policing, or public administration—may now face rejection based solely on party affiliation.

While each case is said to be reviewed individually, the message is clear: AfD members are unwelcome in public life.

The AfD condemned the action as “outrageous,” accusing the CSU-led government of “putting us on the same level as terrorists.” Party leaders announced plans to take legal action.

The move fits into the pattern of the ruling elites’ attempts to silence one of the most popular parties in Germany.
