On Monday, President Trump issued an executive order lifting most U.S. sanctions on Syria, in place since the 1970s, marking a significant move toward normalizing relations with the war-torn nation.

The move comes as Syria is now being run by an interim leader named Ahmed al-Sharaa, or Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, after 24 years of former President Bashar al-Assad leading the country until he was overthrown in December of last year.

The new Syrian leader is a former member or al-Qaeda, joining the group after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and fighting the insurgency where he became a close associate of al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi before being detained by U.S. forces from 2006 to 2011.

After his release in 2011, al-Jawlani, or al-Sharaa, rose within the ranks of the Islamic State of Iraq, the precursor to ISIS and ISIL.

The U.S. State Department just removed a $10 million reward for Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani six months ago.

Amid last decade’s Syrian civil war, al-Jawlani founded the Christian-murdering terrorist group al-Nusra Front, committing suicide bombings and fighting to overthrow the Assad regime.

In 2013, the current head of Syria rejected a merger between al-Nusra and ISI, pledging allegiance to al-Qaeda instead and sparking a violent feud with ISIS.

Forming Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in 2017, al-Jawlani split with al-Qaeda in a phony move meant to distance the new group from hardcore terrorist organizations with a bad wrap.

Despite the man’s disturbing background, the Trump administration has now awarded the terrorist-turned politician by removing decades-old sanctions on his country.

In March, the European Commission forked over €235 million to the news Syrian regime, ignoring decades of massacring the nation’s Alawites and Christians.

Commenting on the rapid change from al-Jawlani being a wanted man to having sanctions lifted by the U.S., Infowars host Harrison Smith wrote, “There have been a lot of crazy things in the last decade but this has got to be in the top 5.”
