Southern California media outlet KTLA was called out by the official Department of Homeland Security 𝕏 account on Monday after the news station accused U.S. Border Patrol agents of “violently detaining” a father and “forcing him into the back of an unmarked car.”

“In a graphic video that has since gone viral on social media, about 7 or more masked men wearing U.S. Border Patrol vests are seen violently detaining a Santa Ana father before forcing him into the back of an unmarked car,” the outlet wrote on social media.

The headline for the article read, “Masked men in U.S. Border Patrol vests take Santa Ana father after repeatedly hitting him.”

KTLA also covered the story in a television news report, calling the detainee “a hard-working, tax-paying immigrant” while admitting he’s in the U.S. illegally.

The man who was arrested in the video has three sons who served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

The news station interviewed one of the sons, who said, “I think part of it was probably racial profiling. I think they assumed, since he was working the landscaping, that he had no documentation…”

The man’s son also claimed his father always “wanted” to file to become a U.S. citizen, but said he was “always working,” despite being in the country since the 1990s.

DHS responded to the news story with a countering claim, writing, “He ASSAULTED federal law enforcement with a WEED WHACKER. Perhaps the mainstream media would like our officers to stand there and be mowed down instead of defending themselves? What a completely slanted portrayal of what actually happened.”

Footage shows the man running with the weed whacker, being pepper sprayed by federal agents and appearing to point the weed-eater towards an officer.

The incident sparked protests within hours of the video being posted online, and a GoFundMe fundraiser for the father has raked in nearly $100,000.

Perhaps, body camera video will be made public to provide clarity on this controversial story.
