The Israeli military carried out a “targeted” strike on an individual in Gaza on Saturday.

A military spokesman said the individual was a member of the group Islamic Jihad and was planning an attack on Israeli troops.

The militant group has not confirmed the identity of the target.

Witnesses who spoke to Reuters said a drone struck a car and set it on fire. Local medics reported that four people were injured.

There were also reports of Israeli shelling in eastern Gaza; although the Israeli military has not commented on those reports.

A US-backed ceasefire is currently in place in Gaza, which has seen Israeli forces retreat to a demarcated line within the territory.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire on multiple occasions.

Last Sunday, the Israeli Defense Forces conducted a series of strikes in apparent response to attacks against troops in Rafah.

The government media office in Gaza said Israel had committed 47 violations after the ceasefire deal, killing 38 dead and wounding 143.

“These violations have ranged from direct shooting at civilians, to deliberate shelling and targeting operations, as well as the arrest of several civilians,” the media office statement said.

There have been disputes over the return of the bodies of deceased hostages, with Israel claiming Hamas has yet to fulfil its full obligations.

Hamas has already returned all remaining living hostages, but has not returned the bodies of all the hostages in its possession.

There still remain significant obstacles on the road to peace. Agreement must still be reached on Hamas disarming, the future governance of Gaza, a proposed international “stabilization” force and moves towards the creation of a Palestinian state.
