The woman, 26-year-old Natalie Greene – who worked as an aide to Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.) – was charged in federal court on Wednesday with “conspiracy to convey false statements and hoaxes and one count of making false statements to federal law enforcement in connection with a staged attack,” the Daily Beast reports.

Via The Daily Beast:
According to the criminal complaint, on July 23, Greene and a female co-conspirator allegedly called 911 to report that Greene had been attacked by three men on a walking trail in the Egg Harbor Nature Reserve.
The co-conspirator has not been named by the U.S Attorney’s Office, but she told emergency service workers the attackers knew Greene’s name and referenced her job with Van Drew.
“They were attacking her. They were like talking about politics and stuff. They were like calling her names,” she allegedly told the operator.
“They were like calling her like racist, calling her a whore,” she added.
When officers found Greene, she was lying with her hands and feet zip-tied, and her shirt pulled over her head. She was crying loudly and yelling “He has a gun, he has a gun.” She had cuts on her body and the phrase “TRUMP WHORE” written across her stomach and Van Drew “IS RACIST” on her back.

Things began unraveling when the co-conspirator and Greene gave investigators conflicting statements.
The co-conspirator’s phone also revealed a search for “zip ties near me,” while Greene’s phone showed she was in Reddit groups regarding “bodymods,” and “scarification.”
Investigators also located suspicious items in her vehicle, a Maserati, like the same type of zip ties used to tie her up and a roll of duct tape.

Investigators alleged Greene had paid a body mod artist $500 to scar her body with a pattern she’d provided them.
In a statement to Axios, Van Drew’s office commented, “While Natalie is no longer associated with the Congressman’s government office, our thoughts and prayers are with her… We hope she’s getting the care she needs.”
Greene was released Wednesday on a $200,000 bond while she awaits further proceedings, with each charge carrying up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
The case is being compared to the infamous Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax.
