67-year-old astrophysicist Carl Grillmair was found dead from a gunshot wound outside his Southern California home Monday.

Carl Grillmair was a Caltech astrophysicist at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center, specializing in galactic astronomy, dark matter, stellar streams, galactic structure, and exoplanets.

Grillmair, who was an expert on distant planets and the intricacies of our vast universe, was shot in the torso at his house located about an hour north of Los Angeles, according to the LA County Medical Examiner.
Police later arrested Freddy Snyder, 29, and charged him with murder in addition to carjacking and first-degree burglary for a separate incident that took place in December.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) scientist was dubbed a “genius” by his peers, receiving praise for reportedly discovering water on a distant planet.
According to his Caltech online biography, Grillmair’s work included research using NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and focused on galactic structure, dark matter and stellar populations.
Police have yet to say whether or not Grillmair and Snyder had any connection before the shooting.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) wrote on social media that it’s “odd” for “so many scientists” to be murdered.
Popular 𝕏 account @SunWeatherMan also cast suspicion on the killing, writing, “‘You hear about the CalTech guy who got shot?’ …no I didn’t hear about the guy who was working in dark matter and galactic physics and also oddly obsessed with looking for comets who got shot on his front porch in the middle of the night in what police are describing as a random robbery/carjacking-related killing.”
He added, “You mean the guy working with infrared data from things like James Webb/Spitzer, the data that has been inch-by-inch contradicting the $300Billion mainstream cosmological paradigm… inching it towards a plasma cosmology, which makes the cycles and pulses and disasters and connections and consciousness and God/spirit stuff we all talk about real? Nah never heard of him.”
