The blast, in Norway’s capital Oslo, was reported at 1 am local time on Sunday, and damaged the entrance to the building, causing minor damage.
Local police have refused to comment on the incident, except to confirm that it happened and that the motive and perpetrator are currently unknown.
A teenager who lives nearby described the incident to Norwegian television.
“My mother and I first thought it came from our house so we looked around a little, but then we saw the flashing lights outside the window and a ton of police,” the teen said.
“There were police dogs and drones and police with automatic weapons and helicopters in the air.”
A heavy policy presence at the embassy is being reported. Images from the scene show heavily armed police.
Social media reports suggest the explosion was caused by a hand grenade, and that a second device was found at the scene and detonated. There have been no official confirmations of this information so far.
US embassies across the world, but especially in the Middle East, have been placed on alert as the US and Israel enter a second week of hostilities with Iran.
On Saturday, the US embassy in Baghdad, Iraq was targeted with rockets.
Video on social media showed the embassy’s C-RAM defense system shooting at the rockets. No casualties have been reported.
