During the event NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that Ukraine can use long-range missiles to strike targets deep within Russia. In November 2024 Joe Biden’s autopen presidency nearly kicked off nuclear World War 3 by allowing Ukraine to do this, followed by the U.K. and France. Trump recently rejected U.S. involvement in such an escalation.
“Ukraine has the right, obviously, to defend itself, particularly of course against all the attacks by Russia,” Rutte said, noting this has been his position for some time now. “And that includes striking targets in Russia with long-range weapons.”
U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that London will push allies to provide Ukraine with more long-range missiles to strike Russian targets.
“We’re accelerating our U.K. program to provide Ukraine with more than 5,000 lightweight missiles,” he said.
While Trump did not cave to Zelensky begging for Tomahawk missiles last Friday, Rutte said Trump has yet to decide if he will gift the long-range missiles to Ukraine.
“Specifically, the President and I discussed the issue of ‘Tomahawk’ missiles,” Rutte said. “President Trump is still considering it, but, as I have said before, the final decision is up to the United States”.
Rutte explained the U.S. is already supplying Ukraine Patriot air defense systems and HIMARS rocket launchers and ATACMS short-range rocket systems.
