The leader of the Iranian delegation has blamed the US for the collapse of peace talks in Pakistan.
In a series of posts on X, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the US had “failed to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation in this round of negotiations.”
“Before the negotiations, I emphasized that we have the necessary good faith and will, but due to the experiences of the two previous wars, we have no trust in the opposing side,” he said.
“My colleagues on the Iranian delegation… raised forward-looking initiatives, but the opposing side ultimately failed to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation in this round of negotiations.
“America has understood our logic and principles, and now it’s time for it to decide whether it can earn our trust or not?”
Ghalibaf said he was grateful to Pakistan for brokering the talks, and added that “we will not for a moment cease our efforts to consolidate the achievements of the forty days of Iran’s national defense.”
In a terse statement after almost 24 hours of negotiations in Islamabad, Vice President JD Vance said Iran had rejected US terms.
“We have been at it now for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news,” Vance said.
“The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that’s bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America.”
The talks began four days after President Donald Trump agreed a two-week ceasefire with Iran.
According to Vance, the main stumbling block was Iran’s refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
“The simple question is, do we see a fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon, not just now, not just two years from now, but for the long term. We haven’t seen that yet. We hope that we will,” Vance said.
Before the meeting, Iran submitted a list of ten proposals. President Trump did not agree to the proposals, but said they were a “workable basis” for negotiations.
