A Somali mom in Minnesota cut her speech short at a press conference Wednesday after reading the words “fraud is bad,” which appeared to shock her into silence.
The incident unfolded on New Year’s Eve, as members of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s (D) office held a press conference opposing the Trump administration’s freeze to childcare funding in the state and elsewhere following journalist Nick Shirley’s exposé on potential Somali daycare fraud.
Speaking at the press conference, Somali mom Deko Nor identified herself as a “parent who receives federal funding for childcare for [her] kiddo.”
Nor went on to say, “If childcare is cut, I am unable to work or go to school.”
She then stumbled when reading, “I understand fraud is bad—” appearing stunned and in disbelief, covering her mouth as she turned to people around her apparently confused and out of breath.

Unable to continue, Nor abruptly ducked out and handed the microphone to another speaker.
The bizarre incident appeared to unfold a second time when activist Maria Snyder took the stage.
“I do see signs over here that say ‘stop fraud’ and I agree, stop it,” Snyder told the crowd to applause.
She continued, “There are waitlists for these programs that are years long,” adding, “There is fraud—” before smiling, covering her mouth with her scripted speech, and falling silent.

The speakers’ baffled expressions appear to belie their true views on the issue, suggesting they may know more than they let on about rampant childcare fraud in Minnesota.
