Jay Trombley, who attended and worked on the safety team of CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, sat down with WXYZ Detroit this week to describe the moment he opened fire on an armed man trying to kill members of the congregation.

After hearing a noise he at first thought was “mechanical,” Trombley turned around, saw church members running away and asked them what happened.

When a young woman responded, “AR-15,” the church security guard was directed to the front of the building where he came upon a man lying on the ground next to a pickup truck and heard bursts of gunfire.

Realizing the pickup truck belonged to a member of the church and that the man on the ground was still firing rifle rounds into the building, striking one person “in the calf,” Trombley opened fire on the shooter and took his gun away as he writhed on the floor.

“By the grace of God he missed me,” Trombley said. “I engaged him and took care of the threat.”

WXYZ reported, “The suspect was armed with a long gun and handgun and wearing a tactical vest when a parishioner struck the suspect with their vehicle.”

The churchgoer who was struck in the leg was another member of the security team, Ron Amann, who also talked with the outlet about the terrifying incident.

Children in the congregation had just gotten off the stage when shooting started and Amann ran toward the sounds of gunfire to protect the church.

Upon entering the building’s lobby, Amann saw the shooter wearing a tactical vest while sitting on the grass outside with a rifle.

While running to take cover so he could engage the gunman, the church security guard was shot in the leg and drew his gun while laying on the ground but the shooter was taken down before he had to use his weapon.

Just three days before the attack, Amann and other members of the security team had trained at the Peacemakers Shooting Range in Howell, Michigan.

“You never think you’re going to go through that. You want to be prepared for something you never think is going to happen,” Amann said.

Police identified the shooter as 31-year-old Brian Browning of Romulus, Michigan, and said he may have been going through a “mental health crisis.”

Browning’s mother, who he lived with, is a member of the church and the shooter had attended a few services in the past, according to the police.
