A suspect was shot and killed by police after he robbed a Brinks truck and then took a woman and her children hostage inside an Ohio apartment, authorities say.
The harrowing incident unfolded in Lorain County at around 3 p.m. on Jan. 21, but security footage just surfaced this week.
The Elyria Police Department (EPD) says John Johnson, 37, ambushed an armored vehicle driver at gunpoint outside an AT&T shop and forced her inside the truck before stealing an undisclosed sum of money and fleeing in another vehicle.
“The suspect showed no regard for the safety of motorists or pedestrians in the area, traveling at speeds over 100 miles an hour,” stated Elyria Police Chief James Welsh.
Attempts to disable the vehicle with spike strips were unsuccessful and Johnson eventually bailed out in the city of North Olmstead.
Johnson reportedly ran into an apartment complex and forced a mother of four into her home as at least two of her children watched from outside.
A pursuing officer can be seen sprinting from his patrol vehicle and ordering the children to “back up” before kicking the door open and immediately firing several rounds into the residence.
Johnson suffered gunshot wounds and was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
“He’s a hero. This was a serious situation from the start,” Chief Welsh said of the officer.
“It was a violent crime, a kidnapping, a robbery, the officers pursued the suspect, and prevented him from harming anyone else.”
