The human smuggling bust unfolded on Tuesday in Maverick County.
Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) troopers pulled over a suspicious vehicle on US-277 and questioned the driver, who was identified as Mohammed Amaad, a resident of Katy.
Amaad claimed he was heading home to Houston after visiting a nearby casino, but troopers detected that his story wasn’t adding up.
While searching the vehicle, troopers discovered a man hiding in the trunk.
“I’m laying here,” the smiling male told the trooper.
Amaad claimed the man had asked him for a ride.
“In the trunk?” the trooper replied.
The man stated he was from Guanajuato, Mexico.
Amaad was promptly arrested and charged with smuggling of persons.
The Mexican male, who was in the U.S. illegally, was turned over to Border Patrol.
“Smuggling organizations continue to adapt due to the lower volume of illegal border crossings, but DPS Troopers remain vigilant,” stated TxDPS spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez.
“Our Troopers are working major corridors leading from the border to larger metropolitan areas, interdicting human smuggling attempts as part of Operation Lone Star 2.0.”
