Five people were arrested for assaulting police officers in Southern California this week, according to reports.
The disturbing incident unfolded at around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in Santa Ana.
Officers were attempting to arrest a man for drinking in public in the downtown area when they came under attack from members of an aggressive crowd.
Footage of the melee has been circulating on social media.
A woman can be seen grabbing an officer by the shoulder as the suspect is handcuffed in the street.
As she is pulled to the ground, two men charge in and knock an officer onto his back.
More bystanders get involved, grabbing and striking officers who eventually regain control.
“As officers were making the arrest, a large crowd surrounded and assaulted officers, preventing the initial arrest,” Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) spokeswoman Natalie Garcia told local media.
Several officers suffered light injuries, and three males and two females were arrested at the scene, SAPD said.
“We understand the concerns that arise when force is used, and we want to assure our community that the incident is being thoroughly reviewed, just as we do with all use of force incidents,” SAPD Chief Robert Rodriguez stated.
In 2016, Santa Ana became the first official “sanctuary city” for illegal aliens in Orange County.
More than 75% of Santa Ana’s residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and many are in the U.S. illegally.
The mob attack comes amid a violent uprising against local and federal law enforcement in California, a sanctuary state.
