On Sunday, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed by Mexican authorities.
In a press release, Mexico’s Minister of Defense said “complementary information was obtained” from the US.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said the cartel leader’s death was “a great development for Mexico, the US, Latin America and the world.”
The US had previously offered a bounty of $15 million for information leading to his arrest.
In response to the killing, members of the CJNG laid siege to the town of Puerto Vallarta, killing police and reportedly taking hostages.
Footage posted to social media shows terrified tourists sheltering in a hotel as parts of the town burn and gunfire can be heard.
Flights from the local airport have been cancelled, leaving tourists stranded.
The US government has issued warnings to American citizens in Mexico.
