President Trump will issue an Executive Order today to rename the Department of Defense “the Department of War.”
The Order will revert the Department to its previous appellation, which was used until 1949.
Secretary Pete Hegseth will be referred to as “Secretary of War.” He will be instructed to make the name change permanent by legal and executive means.
The renaming will have effects across the Department. Websites and signage will be changed, and the public-affairs briefing room will be called the “Pentagon War Annex.” Other measures are expected to be announced soon.
Earlier this week, Trump argued that the “Department of War” carried a “stronger sound.” He said the change would take place quickly.
According to reports, the White House was considering different ways to make the change, in order to get around the need for Congressional approval.
The change is part of the Trump administration’s wider “warrior ethos” campaign, designed to refocus the Pentagon on its primary purpose—warfighting—after the distractions and excesses of the Biden administration.
“Everybody likes that we had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War,” Trump told reporters recently.
“Then we changed it to Department of Defense.”
In related news, the Pentagon is currently planning a military mission to Chicago to continue President Trump’s crackdown on crime.
A number of different options, including the mobilization of thousands of National Guard soldiers, are being considered.
“Chicago is a mess,” the President told reporters.
“And we’ll straighten that one out, probably next.”
President Trump’s crackdown began early last month, when he exercised federal authority over the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and ordered 800 D.C. National Guard troops to be activated throughout the city “to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.”
“We’re formally declaring a public safety emergency. This is an emergency. This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing,” Trump said.
“This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals.
“We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”
