The Executive Order, which President Trump signed on Saturday morning, will accelerate research and approval of psychedelic treatments such as ibogaine.
As he signed the bill, the President was flanked by representatives from Health and Human Services and also the podcaster Joe Rogan.
“It’s for a lot of people, but it’s for our military in particular,” Trump said.
“The suicide epidemic among veterans is a national tragedy. Since 9/11, we’ve lost over 21 times more veteran lives to suicide than on the battlefield.”
The Order states that innovative new methods are required to find lasting solutions for Americans suffering persistent depression, mental illness and substance addiction.
“Psychedelic drugs, including ibogaine compounds, show potential in clinical studies to address serious mental illnesses for patients whose conditions persist after completing standard therapy,” the Order states.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praise the Order and said it would mean people suffering from chronic mental-health issues, including veterans, would no longer be forced to travel abroad to seek new treatments.
“Thousands of veterans are having to travel to Mexico or other countries to experiment with interventions that hold great promise but for which our knowledge is still insufficient,” Kennedy said.
“This executive order will remove the legal impediments that blocked American researchers, scientists, physicians, and clinicians from properly studying these medicines.”
Joe Rogan also praised the Order, and recalled how he had sent President Trump data about the effects of ibogaine.
“I sent him that information, the text message came back, ‘Sounds great. Do you want FDA approval? Let’s do it,’” Rogan said.
“It was literally that quick. These drugs are illegal not because they’re harmful, they’re illegal because of the 1970 Controlled Substances Act.”
The Department of Health and Human Services will now allocate at least $50 million from existing funding to work with states that have been developing programs using psychedelic compounds.
