Deportation exemptions could be created to prevent disruption to industries like agriculture, President Trump has indicated.

During an event at the Iowa Fairgrounds on Thursday, President Trump said he is working with the Department of Homeland Security to create a solution to allow illegals working in agriculture, and possibly other industries, to remain in the US.

“If a farmer is willing to vouch for these people in some way, Kristi, I think we’re going to have to just say that’s going to be good, right?” Trump said, making reference to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Trump said, “We’re working on legislation right now,” and added that he didn’t want to remove people who have been working on farms for years or even decades.

As well as farmers, Trump said he was consulting with owners of hotels and other hospitality businesses to formulate a series of exemptions.

Illegals working in agriculture far outnumber US citizens.

According to figures published by non-profit KFF, 47% of agricultural workers in the US are illegals without any work authorization; 18% are noncitizens with work authorization; and 34% are citizens. A majority of all workers are Hispanic.

Advocates of immigration for agriculture, including the American Business Immigration Coalition, say migrant workers are critical to the US farm sector, which generates over $400 billion a year.

Trump previously indicated a willingness to make exceptions for illegals working in certain industries.

“Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,” Trump said in a Truth Social at the beginning of last month.

“In many cases the Criminals allowed into our Country by the VERY Stupid Biden Open Borders Policy are applying for those jobs. This is not good. We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA. Changes are coming!”

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has backed exemptions.

The president understands that we can’t feed our nation or the world without that labor force, and he’s listening to the farmers on that,” Rollins said in an interview with CNBC.
