Around 200 Marines will be sent to Florida to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), US Northern Command announced on Thursday.
“Service members participating in this mission will perform strictly non-law enforcement duties within ICE facilities. Their roles will focus on administrative and logistical tasks, and they are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain,” US Northern Command said.
The deployment comes as a result of a request received from the Department of Homeland Security at the beginning of May.
Marines are also scheduled to be deployed to Louisiana and Texas to provide administrative and logistical support.
Last month, seven hundred Marines were deployed to Los Angeles to help quell unrest after a series of protests and riots aimed at preventing ICE immigration raids.
California Governor Gavin Newsome mounted an unsuccessful legal challenge to prevent the deployment of troops to the streets of the city, which also included California National Guard.
In the wake of the riots, the Department of Justice has promised mass arrests of participants.
“We are looking at hundreds of people. We have video, we have FBI collecting video, we are collecting body cam, we’re collecting social media, we’re collecting everything,” California US Attorney Bill Essayli told reporters.
“And we’re going to take our time, we’re going to identify people. They think the mask is saving them—it’s not saving them.”
“We’re going to identify them and we will bring charges,” he added.
