Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Tuesday stated that House Democrats who broke quorum by refusing to perform legislative duties and instead abandoning their offices for East Coast blue states are guilty of abandoning their elected offices.
The Texas Dems fled the state on Sunday in order to block a vote approving redistricting in an attempt at preventing Republicans from gaining House seats.
“I will seek judicial orders declaring that runaway Democrats who fail to appear by the Speaker’s deadline have vacated their office. The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don’t show up to work, you get fired,” Paxton wrote on 𝕏.
Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows gave the Democrat politicians until Friday to come back to the state and take part in the vote.
“Any lawmaker who has not been arrested and returned or fails to appear by the Speaker’s deadline will be subject to aggressive legal action by Attorney General Paxton,” the Attorney General’s office stated.
Paxton added, “Democrats have abandoned their offices by fleeing Texas, and a failure to respond to a call of the House constitutes a dereliction of their duty as elected officials. Starting Friday, any rogue lawmakers refusing to return to the House will be held accountable for vacating their office. The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don’t show up to work, you get fired.”
The AG cited a ruling by the Supreme Court of Texas forbidding “the minority faction in the legislature to improperly interfere with the legislative majority’s prerogative to conduct business,” warning the Democrat politicians could lose their seats if they don’t come back in time.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott and other state officials have called for the Democrats to be arrested for obstructing the vote, with GOP Senator John Cornyn asking the FBI to get involved and assist in apprehending them.
