The state of Florida is reportedly planning to set up another detention center for illegal aliens after launching Alligator Alcatraz last month.
Authorities are making initial preparations for a second facility at Camp Blanding, a Florida National Guard training base that lies between Jacksonville and Gainesville.
“The Florida Division of Emergency Management, the state agency that built the Everglades facility, has awarded a $39,000 contract for a portable emergency response weather station and two lightning sirens for what’s been dubbed the ‘North Detention Facility,’ according to records in the state’s public contract database. The equipment will help enable “real-time weather monitoring and safety alerting for staff,” the Associated Press reported this week.
State officials hinted at plans for the second facility in early July following the grand opening of Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades.
State Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie initially projected work would begin shortly after July 4, but the timeline appears to have shifted.
“I would say, right after our wonderful Independence Day, we will be starting construction near that facility,” Guthrie stated at the time.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, credited as the architect of the Everglades facility, also confirmed the Camp Blanding concept.
“You have another big runway there, too,” Uthmeier said.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ordered a temporary pause on any new construction at Alligator Alcatraz.
“Alligator Alcatraz was already constructed and operational. It continues to be operational, detaining and deporting,” Uthmeier stated on Friday.
“The judge’s restraining order was nevertheless wrong and will be appealed.”
