An illegal alien has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a teenage girl dead in Florida, authorities say.
The horrifying incident unfolded at around 4:45 a.m. on July 4 in Hillsborough County.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies arrived and found the deceased teenage victim, identified as 19-year-old Brianna Kelson, but the driver of the other vehicle had fled the scene on foot.
“Preliminary investigative findings and witness statements indicate the female victim was driving on Providence Road when she was struck by another vehicle on Bloomingdale Avenue that ran a red light while traveling at a high rate of speed,” HCSO explained in a press release.
Kelson was on her way to work at Wendy’s when she was killed, according to a statement from her mother on GoFundMe.
Investigators identified the other driver as Roberto Carlos Meza Rosales, 21, and tracked him down within hours.
Meza Rosales admitted to fleeing following the crash and showed signs of impairment, leading authorities to believe alcohol was a “contributing factor.”
HCSO discovered the Honduran illegally entered the U.S. in 2018 and has been residing in Hillsborough County for some time.
Meza Rosales was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Death but could face additional charges.
“This is an absolute tragedy that should have never happened,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister.
“On a day that should have been filled with celebration and time spent with loved ones, a family is now grappling with unimaginable loss. My thoughts are with them as they face this painful road ahead.”
An investigation is ongoing.
