The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) just announced charges against a man and woman from the Eastern European country following their arrests on Tuesday.
LCSO deputies were searching for a vehicle connected with the crime spree when they were alerted about an attempted robbery involving a vehicle matching the description in Ashburn, a town in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
Deputies arrived to find a female victim unharmed, then proceeded to locate and stop the vehicle a short time later.
They arrested Denisa Ghiocel, 31, and Dorel Ghiocel, 35, both of no known address.
The Ghiocels were each charged with one count of Attempted Robbery and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery.
“The LCSO has been investigating eight separate incidents over the past 30 days in which victims were targeted using distraction techniques to remove their jewelry,” LCSO explained in a press release.
“The suspects, undocumented Romanians with active ICE detainers, are believed to be connected to one or more of these incidents and part of a broader criminal network throughout the region.”
The Ghiocels are being held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center without bond.
