Poland’s left-wing government is growing increasingly worried over the popularity of the Polish Border Defense movement, run by volunteers seeking to protect Poland’s border from German police dumping migrants. Now, in the latest crackdown, dozens of tickets have been issued to these volunteers.
Polish Minister of Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak announced that the police issued “dozens of tickets” to the volunteers. In many cases, these volunteers have captured video of German police dumping migrants in Poland, including a case in Gubin that sparked national headlines in the Polish media.

Starting today, July 7, temporary checks are in force on the borders with Germany and Lithuania. Border Guard officers, supported by the police, Military Police and WOT, can stop selected vehicles for random checks.
This is the government’s response to the migration crisis and the actions of German police services, which are pushing illegal migrants into Poland. According to the Interior Ministry, the checks will be carried out for 30 days, until Aug. 5.
Germany introduced border controls with Poland in October 2023. The aim was to stop illegal migration. The restrictions are to end in September.
Groups of Poles opposing the transfer of illegal migrants to Poland by German services have organized citizen patrols on the border. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has described them as “militias.”
During the program “Rozmowo Piaseckiego” on TVN24, Minister Tomasz Siemoniak was asked whether the actions of the Border Defense Movement had an impact on the government’s decision to reinstate border controls.
Siemoniak responded that “it had no significance whatsoever, we are guided by the interest of Poland.”
According to the KO politician, the Border Defense Movement representatives “are relying on false information and stirring emotions. I believe that it is exceptionally dishonest of politicians to try to use this. If someone wants to defend Polish borders, the Border Guard is waiting,” he said. “If someone wants to do this kind of thing honestly and transparently, and not cause trouble, provoke and play politics, then we are waiting with open arms.”
“The Border Guard is a very professional service. It operates very reliably. We report on all cases. And there is no reason to spread disinformation, as PiS politicians do, about thousands of migrants being sent back to Poland by Germany,” said Minister Siemoniak.
The minister was also asked whether the defenders of the Polish border “were caught committing any offenses.”
“There were dozens of tickets issued by the police. There is a case of impersonating an officer taken up by the prosecutor’s office (…) and there is a case of obstructing activities,” he replied.
“Of course, the prosecutor’s office has further steps to take, but we absolutely will not let this go and we will not allow someone who pretends to be a border defender to treat Polish women and men in uniform in this way, who serve all of us and risk their lives for all of us,” he stated.
