The horrifying tragedy unfolded just before 11:30 a.m. in Oklahoma City.
Investigators believe Mercedes Bayne, 36, swerved to avoid debris or an obstruction on Interstate 35, crossed a center cable barrier, and slammed head-on into OHP Trooper Vernon Brake, who was traveling in the opposite direction.
Trooper Brake, Bayne, and a 4-year-old girl in Bayne’s vehicle were all pronounced deceased at the scene.
OHP published an image of a dump truck and trailer, requesting the public contact them with tips or helpful information.
“This picture shows a truck that stopped on I-35 near the incident. It could possibly be the truck that lost part of its load or another truck that stopped to assist in clearing the debris,” OHP stated.
“Anyone with information on this truck or who saw anything today on I-35 around 11:27 this morning is asked to call the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Communications Center at 405-425-2323.”
Trooper Brake, a 20-year veteran of OHP, is survived by his wife and two children.
An investigation is ongoing.
