New York mayoral favourite Zohran Mamdani wants to end the enforcement of all misdemeanor offenses, The New York Post reports.
Mamdani is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and its approved candidate for the mayoralty.
In its most recent platform, the DSA called policing and detention “instruments of class war” and said they function to “guarantee the domination of the working class.”
The DSA demands and end to “the criminalization of working-class survival.”
“For all of the working class to achieve collective liberation we must constrain, diminish, and abolish the carceral forces of the state—from prisons and police themselves, to their manifestations in all forms throughout society,” the party platform states.
Among the misdemeanors the DSA wants to abolish are theft or shoplifting up to a value of $1,000, drug possession, assault without a weapon and driving under the influence.
While on the campaign trail, Mamdani has repeatedly called for police to stop pursuing “non-serious crimes.”
“Police have a critical role to play but right now we’re relying on them to deal with the failures of our social safety net, which is preventing them from doing their actual jobs,” he said in a campaign video posted to X this week.
Mamdani has also questioned the role of prisons and policing itself; although he has moderate his tone on “defunding the police” after the recent Park Avenue massacre.
He has called violent crime an “artificial construct.”
This week, he reiterated his desire to legalize prostitution—or “sex work,” as he calls it.
Although Mamdani, if elected, would not be able to change state laws, he can have a significant effect on how they’re enforced.
He could pressure the NYPD to focus on certain kinds of offences at the expense of others and tell district attorneys not to prosecute certain cases.
Notorious Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, who pursued President Trump, sent out a “day one” memo at the beginning of his tenure ordering his staff not to prioritize armed robberies and drug-dealing.
“That will create an EZ-Pass for criminals, enabling them to repeatedly commit misdemeanor crimes,” said Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa.
“This will make the police even less effective at enforcement. Ultimately, this will cause the quality of life to decline dramatically, leading to a breakdown of law and order and resulting in chaos and disorder.”
DSA members were recently recorded saying Mamdani wants to turn New York in a national hub for transgender surgery.
Daniel Goulden, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA) New York steering committee, told a panel at last month’s conference that “Zohran is literally attempting to do what conservatives say we want to do, which is provide gender affirming care to anyone who wants it for free. We’re gonna fly people in and pay for their hotel rooms.”
In one video posted to social media, he explains how the New York branch of the DSA has been working directly with the Mamdani campaign on his “trans-rights platform.”
“We collaborated with the Zohran Mamdani campaign on his trans-rights platform, and what we explicitly wanted to do was use the power of New York City to provide free gender-affirming care—and I say free in case insurance companies decide to boot us off—free gender affirming care not just to people in New York City but across the country.”
“DSA has regular meetings with him, let alone his team,” Goulden continues.
“His policy director is my friend. I’ve been working with his campaign manager for well over a year.”
In another video, he makes it clear that the goal is to circumvent state bans on transgender surgery and hormonal therapy, presumably for minors as well as adults.
Mamdani is running on a platform that includes a number of radical left-wing reforms, including the establishment of city-owned grocery stores, free childcare and a new tax on residents earning over $1 million a year.
He has also repeatedly said he would tax white neighborhoods in New York more heavily than others.
President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding from New York if Mamdani wins the race, in November.
Speaking to Maria Bartiromo of Fox News said he would take the drastic measure if Mamdani doesn’t “do the right thing.”
“He’s a communist,” Trump said.
“I think it’s very bad for New York. I don’t know that he’s gonna get in. It’s inconceivable… but he’s a communist, and he’s pure communist. I think he admits it. I can’t imagine it, but let’s say this: If he does get in, I’m gonna be president, then he’s going to have to do the right thing, but they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do to the right thing.”
