Newsom was speaking at the South by Southwest Conference in Austin on Sunday when he strongly signalled his intentions—but only if Democrats win the House in the midterms this year.
“If we don’t take back the House of Representatives in 2026. Nothing else matters,” Newsom said.
Newsom was then asked about a “second date” with his supporters in 2028.
His response: “The work that needs to be done between now and then to get Speaker [Hakeem] Jeffries that gavel. If we can do that? Then you and I can go on a second date.”
Newsom was speaking to influencer Vivian Tu for a live episode of her podcast “Networth and Chill.”
He used the appearance to plug his new book, and also slam President Trump.
He called Trump an “invasive species” and a “jackass,” and warned that the integrity of American elections is on the line.
“I do not believe we will have a fair and free election as we know it in 2028, if we don’t take back the House,” Newsom said.
Last month, Newsom attended the Munich Security Conference and told the audience “Trump is temporary” and will be gone in three years. He also criticized the President for rolling back green regulations and “literally reopening coal plants in the United States of America.”
