German public servants such as police officers and firefighters are under constant threat in the capital of Berlin, but even seemingly benign positions, like a ticket inspector, can also suffer severe violence.
Two thugs, 24-year-old Mohammad A. and his wife Israa M. (22), a husband and wife duo, beat a 47-year-old ticket inspector until he went blind in one eye.
The incident occurred on Aug. 18, 2022, on the M29 bus at the Wittenbergplatz stop. The ticket inspector was checking tickets on the bus for the BVG, the Berlin transport authority.
When the man came to the two convicted individuals, Mohammad A. and Israa M., Mohammad did not have a valid ticket and the electronic chip card from Israa could not be properly read.
During the attack, the two convicted individuals called the victim a racial slur referring to Black people, screaming “n••••r,” according to the court testimony.
When they were ordered off the bus, Mohammad A. refused to provide his personal details.
The ticket inspector’s partner said that Mohammad A. “showed no cooperation and approached my colleague.” He wanted to take the electronic chip card back from his wife.
The witness was held down by one ticket inspector while the other ticket inspector, the main victim, called the police.
“He slapped me in the chest. I lost my balance,” said the witness.
He was then punched and kicked on the ground, while his partner was also attacked.
“Don’t touch my wife,” the defendant shouted. The inspector screamed that he did not touch anyone.
However, the woman then entered the fight, striking with her handbag and fist.
The main victim, who has been given the pseudonym Femi B., was called a “dirty n****r,” at which point the woman used pepper spray on him.
Later, he was told after an operation in the hospital that he would never see with his right eye again.
In court, Femi B. cried on the stand, saying his “old life had been taken from me.” He said he is also still in pain.
He said he has three children in Nigeria and depends on his wages to support them. He is now medically listed as 70 percent disabled and works as an office assistant.
“I no longer feel safe on the street,” he said regarding the psychological consequences of the attack.
The defendant, Mohammad A., said in court, “I’m so sorry about your eyes.“
He was on probation at the time of the incident.
This was not an isolated incident, as Remix News reported in a variety of crimes involving foreigners beating ticket inspectors.
In fact, German train conductors have been told not to check tickets to “keep the peace.”
In 2023, Germany’s rail system saw an explosion in violence, with 75 violent and sexual crimes every single day. There were 25,640 violent crimes recorded in 2023, a 42 percent increase from 2019. There were 1,898 sexual crimes, a 60 percent increase, and 555 knife crimes.
