The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing titled, “Oversight of Fraud and Misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota: Part I,” on Wednesday, listening to state representatives and officials describe how tax-funded programs are being exploited by fraudsters.
Following the hearing, Minnesota State Rep. Marion Rarick (R) told Lindell TV reporter Allison Steinberg that whistleblowers have faced retaliation for speaking out against the fraud.
Rarick pointed to Minnesota Department of Human Services compliance reporting specialist Faye Bernstein, who previously voiced concerns about the legality of DHS contracts, as one example of a whistleblower facing threats.
“She was heavily investigated, she was moved to a different state agency, she was retaliated against in every kind of way you could think. What’s happened now, is retaliation has escalated, and now it’s, ‘You’re going to lose your job, you’re going to lose your home, we’re going to track your children, we’re going to make sure you can’t get a job anywhere else in state government,’ and for Minnesota that means probably Minneapolis-St. Paul… You can’t get a job anywhere Democrats control,” the state rep. said of Bernstein.
While some people who spoke out have already been fired, Rarick said she hopes that shining a light on the fact that whistleblowers are being punished for speaking out will encourage others to spill the beans on what they’re seeing.
During the hearing, Rarick also detailed how whistleblowers are essentially risking “career suicide” by sounding the alarm on the rampant fraud taking place in the state.
